Don’t Get Caught With Your CPC Training Quota Pants Down
September 19th, 2024 is a key day for lorry, truck, and bus drivers across the UK as that is the date by which every professional driver must have attained their allotted 35 hours of CPC training quota for the previous five-year period.
Not only is this important for a driver to keep their livelihood but also to stop them from being fined up to £1000 as outlined on the gov.uk website
Where are we seeing a potential huge CPC Training Quota problem?
We recently ran a poll on Linked In and it was astonishing to see that 57% of drivers who responded still needed to undertake 28-35 hours to reach their CPC training quota, while a further 29% still needed to get another 14-21 hours of training completed to reach their CPC training quota.
What problems does this cause for employers of these drivers?
Firstly, if these drivers do not get up to speed quickly with their required CPC training hours, then as the year goes on we will see a bottleneck of traffic, (pun intended) of drivers searching for accredited training providers.
This will then lead to the costs of obtaining this CPC training quota to increase as we slowly tick down to September 19th.
In addition, If a driver does not obtain those required hours, he/she is off the road and this causes major headaches for the employer.
They then have a shortage of drivers meaning they will have to bring on board more expensive agency staff, and they will then have the added cost of recruiting drivers to fill these gaps.
What problems will this cause to the driver?
Well, along with a hefty fine, he/she will not be able to work legally and that is a clear risk. Being fined is one thing, but having your livelihood taken away is a different ball game.
As the year goes on, this problem will become more acute and we would urge companies and solo drivers to get this front and centre in their thoughts.
We all get in our heads that “we still have time” and that is until it’s too late.
The time to start planning and taking action on your required CPC training quota is now, and hopefully, this post will make you think about this topic seriously.
